Annotation:
„Jean Cocteau’s play Les Parents terribles allows for many possible interpretations. For different audiences today, it could be a story about the abdication of modern man—from responsibilities, obligations, even from rights. His retreat onto an island of his own eccentricities, whims, rituals, dependencies, passions, secrets, and lies… A requiem for the universal moral infantilism of our time. Or of timelessness itself.

It could be the collapse of the family—the disintegration of the emotional bonds between spouses; the children’s rebellion against their parents; the refusal of the next generation to accept and follow the established order… A questioning, and even a mocking, of yesterday’s moral dogmas and norms. The relativism of yesterday’s truth.

Or it could be about the selfishness of modern man—incapable of understanding the fears and longings of another. His absurd conviction that he knows better than his fellow human being what is best for him or her. Self-sufficiency as salvation from the hell of others. I, I, and I as the measure of everything and everyone.

BUT above all, this is a play about LOVE. About the dizzying rapture of feeling that elevates us. About devotion carried to the point of self-denial. About the tender, furious clinging to, intertwining with, and inhabiting the other. About the happiness of winning—and the temptation to enslave—the object of desire. About the joy, lightness, and freedom of one visited by Eros. About the dark, destructive fate of the human being overtaken by passion. About the miracle and the pain of being in love.“
