To our teachers — the authors, directors and actor-stalkers in the magical realm of theatre — with love.
“You cannot grow accustomed to the dark” is a line from Roots, the memorable production directed by Leon Daniel that inaugurated the newly established Sofia Theatre 60 years ago. I still remember its poetic power to this day, and I continue to follow the legacy it left behind. I follow the spirit of a theatre whose purpose is to shake people to their core with truth — both those on stage and those in the auditorium — to unsettle them and awaken their consciousness. A theatre that moves us, but also challenges us to think.
For years thereafter, the explosive intellectual and critical energy of a remarkable gathering of artists — Yordan Radichkov, Ivan Radoev, Stefan Tsanev, Konstantin Iliev, Valeri Petrov, Ivan Peychev, Boyan Papazov, Veselin Hanchev, Georgi Markov, Parvan Stefanov, Leon Daniel, Lyuben Groys and Nikolay Polyakov — together with a group of outstanding actors, supported by directors willing to take risks, created a theatre of the future within the confines of the socialist system. Bold, provocative, gifted and ahead of its time.
It was extraordinary to witness how, despite the constraints of the time, the dream of a different kind of theatre was becoming reality before our very eyes — a different intuition about being through art and about its mission.
For us, the generations of theatre-makers who followed, the lessons of this theatre were both a source of courage and a test.
Our production today is an inspired attempt to take up the baton from them and carry it forward — not by following the letter, but by remaining true to the spirit.
